The Assassination of Barack Obama: Freedom of expression or racism?

 
 
A controversial art exhibit was raided and shut down before it could be viewed in NYC yesterday.

According to the NY Times blog: Cityroom, Boston-born performance artist, Yazmany Arboleda, tried to set up a provocative art exhibition in a vacant storefront on West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan with the title, "The Assassination of Hillary Clinton/The Assassination of Barack Obama".

The artist thought his racist views were protected under the Constitution because he was expressing himself through his art. Wrong.

Not 30 minutes after Arboleda set up the gallery across the street from the New York Times building, police, feds and secret service swooped in to shut the art exhibit down. While police covered the offensive storefront window with brown paper, Arboleda was led away in handcuffs to be "interrogated".

Arboleda, 27, learned the hard way that freedom has its limits. Later, in an interview, he said: "It's art. It's not supposed to be harmful. It's about character assassination — about how Obama and Hillary have been portrayed by the media." He added, "It's about the media."

I write this with tears in my eyes%u2026%u2026..Let the haters do this now because when Obama is President and he will be. The Secret Service and the CIA will have a special place for these despicable haters.

I don't know what the artist was thinking, but I thought it was funny. If the artist did this with the intent of hurting some ones feelings It is not funny it is a waste of time but if he wanted to make some one laugh and went over board then it looks like a skit from Saturday night live the X-rated edition.

This was just some guy creating what he thought was art. It's supposed to be shocking or who would give him any attention at all. People are so quick to point out someone who is racist, he didn't create anything that hasn't been said before. By creating such an ordeal about his exhibit he's geting exactly what he wanted. If you are so against him, stop writing about it.

Why is this website giving this "artist" more exposure than he would have gotten otherwise? You're showing these disgusting photos to the entire world. Giving the "artist" exactly what he wanted without him having to lift a finger.

Unbelievable and completely irresponsible. Exposing this filth is worse than the "artist" putting it together.

American's do not be fooled! Any 'latino' who is real - unlike this artist joker will tell you the simple truth. Latin America is Latin Aparthied, no different from those Boers in SOuth Afrika. Most/all of South America Catholic countries had Wars of Independence unlike Anglo Caribbean/S.America. Just like South Am. the reality was - not the theory as Caste System. I have family they will hang with black folks in the US (just like that movie Missispi Masala) but when HOME, looked down on the african blood line even though we know most of our mothers in the New World were Indigeneous or African. If that Artist had any real balls, which I don't and I'm an artist. He would make Columbia the focus, and just how will the racist white people there CHANGE their attitudes to Black and Indigenous people now that the OBAMA is here. Understand this Diaspora in America, you influence reaches BEYOND the US. The Black Power movement in Trinidad was because of the US, Roots Reggae blew up because of what happened in the US (Rasta's been around and penalized since 1930's in JA but no real influence tilll 1970's). But the artists didn't he just went for cheezy safe/shock value nonsene. For example, he could have had a big picture of Indigenouse Columbians - the people who actually GROW the 'cocaine' leaf in a stand off with the white drug lorde against a colonial backdrop as if the Columbians is saying 'Oh hear wot Dago, Tings a gwaaaaaaaaan, we taking we share'. But maybe then his white latino family would get vex with him airing their stinking dirty third world Laundry! I sound harsh, I got the right I'm from a third world getto and tired of Latin Apartheid. Obama visual presence on the world wide media inspires us to stand up!

I think most are missing the point of the exhibit. I think what the artist is trying to do is put it in your face. He uses the same bigoted things we have heard over the years and puts it harshly in your face. In "nappy head hoes" he has the Caption over a beautiful picture of Obama girls with Barrack. To me he is showing the Contrast of the statement and Reality. When Imus first made the statement it was like every white radio/tv personality was repeating it with no one to call them on it. The extra large penis in the display......Well we have heard that for years. The Artist just shows a ridiculous size penis to make fun of the stereotype. The obama mask was a skit on Saturday night live.. The "just passing" is probably mentioned because the media was asking at one time "is he black enough" because of his biracial history. This was a attempt to get black voters to turn away from him. The artist sees the message the media was sending. Some of us missed it. I take the artist as his word. I dont not find the exhibit offensive, I find it thought provoking. Thats the reason we are talking about it now.

I don't think Latinos are all that racist. Note the majority of Latinos have African bloodlines. That includes Columbians. This guy is just an idiot thinking that he can propogate his racist views and call it art.
More than likely he is the by product of at least one African ancestor, and is distrubed by that realization.

Just think of all the African/Americans we've heard of in the past who passed over into the white world never to be seen or heard from again. It isn't that much different in his country either, and bet that's what his problem is.

It still does not excuse him ffrom this blatant show of disrespect and racism. He needs help! Can some of you brothers out there show him the light?

Wow, this to me was a shocker that this guy was able to get this much done. Congrats on the authority on shutting it down as fast as they did. I wonder if Hannity will talk about this today, probably not. He'll just say " the blacks are running around starting stuff again, freedom of speech, if you don't like it then don't go there".

How ironic that Hillary Clinton spoke of assassination and this happens. What did Hillary have to say about this - I mean, this place is in New York right? Did any of the other leaders, denounce this action?

Although all of the depictions were outrageous, when you bring someone's family (especially those two gorgeous girls) into your cruel attempt of "Artwork", you crossed the line. Senator -- umm excuse me, President Obama didn't play with his wife; could you imagine what he'd do for those two girls?

Sounds like the CIA needs to watch this guy, a weeeee-bit more closely!

SICK............................I'M DISGUSTED BY THIS PERSON'S IGNORANCE. WHY WAS THIS EXHIBIT ALLOWED TO BE SET UP IN THE MUSEUM? I DON'T KNOW WHO IS TO BLAME THE JACKASS WHO DESIGNED IT OR MUSEUM OFFICIALS.

i believe in freedom of speech but thats not freedom of speech thats hate calling for the assassination of a presidential candidates thats just wrong and immoral weither i believe in there politics or not people should put there selves in other peoples shoes and think how they would feel if that was said or drawn up on them it's just wrong for people to act like that
